Social determinants such as low family income, poverty, and racial discrimination can hinder an individual’s access to an improved quality of life including healthcare and education. Beginning education at a young age is crucial for the development of a healthy mind as well as economic productivity. Further, general sex education is a taboo topic in many countries to which Sierra Leone is no exception, leading to many teen pregnancies and/or prenatal health complications.

To better youth education, we visited many orphanages across Sierra Leone from the Eastern city, Waterloo, to Wellington off the western coast. Our team conducted a space for comprehensive health education to foster career advancement. We had educational workshops for youths, ages ranging 1-18, to help them decide what future paths they could pursue into adulthood. Kids were interested in a range of topics from medicine and anatomy to teaching.

A lot our work was concentrated in Don Bosco's house for girls located in Freetown. Community leaders and nurses engaged in promoting the protection of young women’s sexual health and developing safe sex practices.
